Photography: While I have been shooting since I was a little kid using 126 cartridge film cameras with flash cubes (who is old enough to remember those?), it was at UVic that I really honed my photographic skills by shooting for the student newspaper all sorts of news worthy items like visits from foreign dignitaries, sports, and concerts. You never knew what or who you were going to shoot and you still had to make sure to turn in something on film after. Since then, I have photographed all sorts of subjects, in and out of the studio, from politicians, couples, supreme court judges, musicians, burlesque dancers, and models. I’m a member of the Professional Photographers of America (PPA), Wedding Photojournalist Association (WPJA) and Wedding and Portrait Photographers International (WPPI). These organizations allow me to network with peers and to keep improving my skills. Why I do what I do: I love the various challenges of wedding photography -- it's a blend of still life, sports, architecture, fashion, and of course art, all rolled into a tight timeframe. And the emotions! Those are the best parts. Most of all, I see myself as a storyteller and an artist, preserving forever a precious and beautiful slice of time for people, and I feel privileged each and every time someone entrusts me with their photography. I often receive compliments from clients that I was a lot of fun, which thrills me greatly because I think I have a very neat role, being one of the few people that get to be with the wedding couple all day long. Many have received me into their family as a friend, and for that I am truly honoured and humbled. Words I live by: One of my favourite sayings, and one that has gotten me far in life, is "do one thing each day that scares you". How I got where I am: I went to school in West Vancouver, BC and later to SFU and UVic, ending up with a Mathematics and History degree, a most unusual combination, but I think that generally fits who I am, someone a little unexpected and different. Aside from photography, computers and digital imaging are my main gig. I spent many years at Microsoft Canada, a very formative experience. Languages: I have at one time or another formally studied the following languages: French, Malay, Russian, and Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin). Do send me a friend request on Facebook and/or check out my Facebook fan page. I look forward to meeting and chatting with you over coffee. Don’t be shy! I'll buy! ~ Martin |
